OpenCart to Magento SEO Migration

The Challenge

Giri Trading Agency's e-commerce catalogue needed to move off OpenCart onto Magento for better platform capability and scale. Platform migrations are one of the highest-risk SEO events - a mishandled URL structure, missing redirects, or lost metadata can wipe out years of organic rankings overnight.

What I Did

• Audited and mapped every indexed OpenCart URL to its new Magento equivalent
• Implemented 301 redirects for the full URL map ahead of launch
• Rebuilt and resubmitted the XML sitemap for the new Magento structure
• Set canonical tags to prevent duplicate content issues between old and new URL patterns
• Preserved existing meta titles, descriptions, and schema markup through the migration
• Ran a full pre-launch crawl to catch broken links and redirect chains before go-live
• Monitored Google Search Console daily post-launch to validate indexation and catch ranking drops early

Outcome

The migration went live with the full URL map redirected and no loss in search rankings - the primary goal of any SEO-first platform move.
